The two-minute breathing reset I teach every patient
One short practice you can use in a parking lot, a waiting room, or between meetings.
This is the practice I taught most often at the bedside, usually to someone who told me they were fine and clearly was not. It takes two minutes and works anywhere you can sit still.
How it works
Sit with both feet on the floor. Breathe in through your nose for four counts, pause briefly, then out through your mouth for six. Repeat for two minutes. If you lose count, start again without judgment. Losing count is part of it.
Your breath is the one part of your stress response you can reach directly.
When to use it
Before a difficult conversation, after one, in the car before you walk into your house, or any time your jaw and shoulders have crept upward without permission.
If breathing exercises make you feel lightheaded or panicky, stop and simply lengthen your exhale slightly instead. Comfort is the goal, not perfect technique.
