Why your evening routine matters more than your mattress

What actually helps you fall asleep faster, and the small wind-down habits worth keeping.

People often ask me which mattress or supplement will fix their sleep. Both matter far less than the ninety minutes before you get into bed. Sleep is a slope, not a switch, and your evening decides how gentle that slope is.

Dim before you decide to sleep

Bright overhead light late at night tells your body it is still daytime. Switching to lamps an hour or two before bed is one of the cheapest, most reliable changes you can make.

Give the day an ending

Tidy one surface, set out tomorrow morning, write two lines in a notebook. A small closing ritual tells your mind that thinking time is finished. Without one, the thinking tends to follow you under the covers.

You cannot force sleep. You can only make the conditions so friendly that it arrives on its own.

Keep the bed for sleeping

If you have been lying awake for twenty minutes or so, get up, sit somewhere dim, and do something quiet until you feel heavy again. Staying in bed frustrated teaches your body that bed is a place for being awake.

Persistent insomnia, loud snoring, or waking unrefreshed most mornings deserve a medical evaluation rather than another routine change.
