Five minutes that lower your stress load
Simple, nurse-approved ways to reset your nervous system between tasks, no app or equipment needed.
On the units where I worked, nobody ever had a spare hour. What we had were the small gaps between tasks, and those gaps turned out to be enough. Five honest minutes can move your body out of alert mode and back into something steadier.
Start with your exhale
Most of us breathe in deeply when we feel tense and then hold it. Try the opposite: breathe in for a count of four, out for a count of six. The longer exhale is what signals your nervous system that the emergency is over. Do it six times and notice your shoulders.
You do not have to feel calm to practice calming. The practice comes first, the feeling follows.
Give your senses something ordinary
Warm water on your hands. The weight of a mug. The temperature of the air near a window. Anchoring in one plain physical sensation interrupts the loop of anticipation that keeps stress running in the background.
Close the loop before the next thing
Write down the one item you are still carrying mentally, then step away from it. Your brain relaxes when it trusts that something will not be forgotten. That is not a productivity trick, it is stress relief.
None of this replaces care for chronic stress or anxiety. If your body is stuck in high alert most days, that is worth a real conversation with your clinician.
