Questions to ask before you leave the exam room

How to leave an appointment with answers instead of a folder of new questions.

The most common thing I heard after a visit was a version of the same sentence: I did not want to slow the doctor down. You are allowed to slow the visit down. Here is how to use the time well.

Bring three questions, written

Three is realistic for a standard visit. Written means you will not lose them when the conversation moves quickly. Hand the list over at the start rather than the end.

Ask these before you stand up

What is this, in plain words? What are my options, including doing nothing for now? What should make me call you sooner? When will I hear about results, and what happens if I do not?

A good clinician is not annoyed by clear questions. Clear questions make their job easier too.

Repeat it back

Say the plan in your own words before you leave. Misunderstandings surface immediately, and you leave with something you can actually follow at home.
